Hello,
This is the day that I usually email you with a sparkling new episode of The Wintering Sessions. However, this week I have something a bit different for you.
For several years now, I’ve been working with Audible to adapt my memoir, The Electricity of Every Living Thing, into an audio drama. Today, it’s finally being released - and I think it’s something really special.
I can say that because I decided early on that my creative input was the book itself - drama is not my area of expertise, so I took a back seat. But what I could offer was the absolute insistence that the whole production was made by a neurodivergent team. It’s been hard to achieve that at times, but I’m very proud to say we’ve done it, largely thanks to the series consultant Professor Nicola Shaughnessy. The value added by those different minds has been immeasurable. It’s a groundbreaking production.
Written by Julie Parsons and directed by Catriona Shoobridge, Audible’s Electricity of Every Living Thing is a rich sensory landscape, recorded in binaural sound which aims to immerse listeners in the walk, and in the complex experience of being autistic. Original music and sound composed by Calum Perrin creates an exquisite texture throughout the whole piece. It’s a truly innovative project, and listeners are urged to use earphones in order to hear the full spectrum of the soundscape.
Strangest for me was the idea of being played by an actor. I must admit that I found the whole concept very unsettling for a while, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to listen. But after meeting the brilliant Amy McAllister, I felt in very safe hands. I think she’s done an incredible job.
Anyway: please consider listening (links below)! If you’re an Audible subscriber, it will cost you one credit. If you’re not, you can sign up for a free trial at audible.com, and pay nothing at all. Which, I think we can all agree, is a bargain.
I hope you love it.
All good wishes,
Katherine

I ordered this on an Audible trial a few weeks ago and have been parceling it out, hoarding a bit, listening at times when I could silence everything else, pop in the air pods, and close my eyes. I’d not previously listened to a binaural recording and it was amazing, like walking through those months in real time, accompanying you! Very cool experience, at least for this 65-year old! And once again, I found myself resonating with your words, experiences, and just the various effects that were employed in the production...and wanting to hide under the covers at times. Wow! ❤️
This is truly extraordinary in every way --- I am so excited to hear this and to share it widely---
