Hello,
Our next True Stories Book Club is on Wednesday 17th May, 8pm UK time. My guest is Cariad Lloyd, speaking about her book You Are Not Alone: a new way to grieve.
Here’s a brief reading guide to get you up to speed. Subscribers can send in questions for Cariad to answer, and you can either watch live on Wednesday, or catch the replay at your leisure. It’s not too late to join us!
About the book
Part-memoir, part guidebook for ‘griefsters’ (Cariad’s affectionate term for listeners to her podcast, Griefcast) You Are Not Alone is a warm, honest hybrid that will deeply comfort anyone who’s ever felt lost in their loss.
Starting with her Dad’s death of cancer when Cariad was 15, the book walks us through the real experience of grief: all-encompassing, perpetual, ever-changing, complicated. Interspersed with Cariad’s own responses (given that she was a teenager, things got messy), we hear voices from former Griefcast interviewees describing their own experiences of bereavement. Most people will recognise themselves somewhere in here.
But this is also something of a modern guide to mourning, full of permission to do it your way. At every stage of the (lifelong) process, Cariad examines the language, choices and effects of grief in a way that’s always diverse and never prescriptive. It’s a fluid, heartfelt read. I found it hard to put down, and I’ve given it to so many people already. I think you’re going to love it.
(It’s not yet out in the US, so American readers might want to try Amazon.)
