If you’re just catching up, here are Part 1 and Part 2 of this True Stories Book Club readalong.

Having now reached the central section of the book - Picking Sweetgrass, an exploration of the ‘honorable harvest’ - it was a great time to talk to Kaitlin Curtice, the author of Native and Living Resistance. I knew her Potawotami perspective would be invaluable.

However, I didn’t expect Kaitin to produce a braid of sweetgrass - shining like a plait of human hair - and light it to show how it’s burned as medicine. It really helped me to understand more deeply the nature of this plant, and the way it's woven into the lives of Indigenous Americans.

In this recording, we spoke about gift exchange, gratitude, the stark difference between Skywoman and Eve, and the way that rewilding initiatives have often abandoned a landscape without humans.

Here’s a clip of our conversation, plus the transcript. Paid Subscribers can find the full recording further down.
