Okay, okay, I know this is a monthly newsletter and I already mailed you last week, but I have a couple of bits of good news that I wanted to share.
First up, I’m delighted to say that Wintering is on the Wainwright Prize longlist for nature writing! It’s a great selection of books altogether, and I wholeheartedly recommend browsing the list to bolster your tbr pile. That’s what I’ve been doing…
Without wishing to detract from the brilliance of any of these books, I’ve been musing on Instagram that it’s time we saw more diversity in nature writing. Kudos to Jini Reddy for being the first person of colour to be listed for the prize.
Secondly, I promised to let you know when my new podcast, The Wintering Sessions, goes online - and so I’m excited (relieved, actually - it took bloody ages) to tell you that the trailer is now uploaded. You can listen on Apple Podcasts and Spotify or use the RSS feed (if these are no good, let me know where you listen to your podcasts and I’ll try to get it listed there).
If you hit ‘subscribe’ you’ll get the first full episode when lands on Monday* - in it, I’ll be talking to Penny Wincer, author of Tender, about her time as a young carer for her mother, and her current mission to not just care for her young autistic son Arthur, but to adore him, understand him and advocate for him too. Penny is warm and wise, I found talking to her very moving.
Looking into the future, I have an incredible list of guests on their way, including fellow Wainwright-ee Jini Reddy, Leah Hazard, Rachael Lucas, Salena Godden, Remona Aly, Rebecca Armstrong, Raynor Winn, Catherine Cho and Huma Qureshi. Pretty proud of that lineup - and there are more to come :)
So as you can tell, I’ve been busy. It keeps me out of trouble, right?
Just a final thought: Black Lives Matter.
Until the next mail,
*Given that it took me 5 days to get the trailer online, this could be wishful thinking. But humour me.
The KoFi button is new. No obligation, but if you enjoy my letters, your tips are appreciated and help me make more time to write :)
