>>"Could this year be the year that we entertain the idea that we’re not all that bad?"

AMEN.

ALL THE AMENS.

SOMEONE ORDER MORE AMENS, LOOKS LIKE WE'RE FRESH OUT OF AMENS.

I so wish this was more of a thing: not "this is the year that at long last you become Your Best Self" but "oh wow, another year you get to explore how wonderfully, boundlessly sufficient you are, and really have fun doing that. Hooray!"

Wonderful thoughts. I too wonder about the whole new year's resolution business as I make and break every year. Why should the passing of one day, once a year make such a difference. If we want to make changes in our lives, surely the time to do it is now?! In fact I've a big change in my life approaching which will start on 2 March or 2.3.23 for the numerologists!

Yes!! For years, decades, I set resolutions for the new year, tried to remake myself into someone who was more like society’s expectations-- thinner, more fit, better dressed, prettier, cooler...whatever! And usually felt deep guilt and inadequacy before the end of January because I’d failed. It is so freeing and so much healthier to simply try to be my real best self every day.

And I adore Pico Iyer! Can’t wait!
