I love reading your posts, Katherine. There is such comfort in knowing that I’m not the only one feeling this way, and you articulate it so much better.
That last paragraph. Beautiful. Thank you for this place to read your words of beauty to revive my weary heart! It’s odd here in our country, the storm rages all around, but has yet to fully make contact. I write this as two of my adult children hold their breath wondering when their jobs will be taken with the stroke of a mad man’s pen. It all becomes too much to bear and I retreat to my little garden, where the spinach is just
poking its head above the soil & the fennel bulbs are expanding, their wispy foliage billowing over the edges of my raised bed. There is beauty to be found in a garden even when it feels as though the world is on fire.
I am still awaiting my copy in support of my little indie book shop on the lake! I could not find in our library network but will listen until my copy arrives! I just loved finding your pinterest link! Clearly so many boards align with my own and I look forward to creating outside once the weather warms up! I too love Spelling Bee and am content to find what I find but wonder who exactly is finding the most?! I would love a sheet to follow after each game to see the words that I did not create! What is Bircher Muesli?! Must try Severance!🍁🍁🎉🎉🥰🥰🌲🌲💚💚
I had not heard of Dyer’s book but needed some light relief so started to listen to the audiobook, it is utterly brilliant, hilarious and thoughtful at the same time. Dyer is extremely well read and writes wonderfully, noticeable even listening to Tom Hollander’s excellent narration. Can’t wait for the discussion. Enjoy the sunshine Katherine, south west London has exploded in Magnolia and cherry blossom, and the unbroken sunny forecast is as unseasonable as during the first lockdown, I sometimes think the universe is throwing us a bone…
I'm looking forward to reading Out of Sheer Rage together. It was a bit of a challenge to find a copy in Canada, but a UK copy arrived on time. My page numbers are a little different, so if it helps, here is the schedule with the page numbers adjusted for the Cannon Gate edition with ISBN 978 1 78211 513 7 (same cover as is in the newsletter):
7th - 13th April: pages 1 - 47, section ending ‘I read, looked out of the window, slept, read, or dreamed I read and looked out of the window.’
14th - 20th April: pages 47 - 89, section ending ‘And over all of this, a sky of Camus blue…’
21st - 27th April: pages 89 - 124, section ending ‘Nietzsche, the Goncourt brothers, Barthes, Fernando Pessoa, Ryszatd Kapuscinski, Thomas Bernhard…’
28th April - 4th May: catchup break
5th May - 11th May: pages 124 - 166, section ending ‘I read other letters in the same spirit, obsessively, eager to see what will set him off next.’
12th May - 18th May: pages 166 - 212, section ending ‘then you can despair.’
19th May - 25th May, pages 212 - end.
Hope that helps :)
****Would someone be so kind and share with me how this book club works? If I understand it correctly, we read according to the schedule, watch the corresponding video, and comment under the video, right? Thank you.
Thanks so much for working out these pages Vi! It’s very kind of you - it’s so hard to manage books with no chapters!
Yes, we all just read the same bit each week, and then there’s a post that invites some discussion alongside it. It should still be possible to follow along even if you don’t keep up :)
Having trouble getting Out of Sheer Rage at library, apparently many in the Pacific North West part of the US are also reading this as it’s a 10 week Hold in my library. Will check the fabulous bookstore called Powell’s books for a copy. Hopeful!
I always enjoy your What I'm Loving list & would love to know how you come across some of them eg the Lithuanian grass crosses! Arent they amazing. Thank you for broadening my world by sharing yours.

I saw this event happening in October- delivered by Geoff Dyer and thought timely to share: https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/geoff-dyer-why-the-novel-matters/?btn&utm_source=wordfly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=MEM_250401_literaturesummerseason&utm_content=version_B&promo=105291

So glad you loved it! I’m Dorset in hope of a little walk, and it’s beautiful but still pretty chilly 🥶
