Introducing Notes & Fragments
A free digital book for annual subscribers
Hello,
From now on, if you take out an annual subscription to The Clearing, you’ll receive Notes & Fragments.
Commonplace Book:
A notebook compiling scraps of useful or interesting information.
So much of what I write never sees the light of day. Essays fizzle out or fail to find a publication. Chapters are cut from books. Jotted thoughts stay hidden between the pages. Quotes are noted and then forgotten.
Mostly I’m fine with this; writing involves a certain amount of wastage. But sometimes these fragments deserve a second life, and so I’ve compiled them into a digital book to share.
Notes & Fragments is a beautifully designed compendium of all my stray thoughts from the past year. Some pieces are short and enigmatic; some are longer chunks of writing that didn’t ever find a home. They’re gathered together with a selection of my photographs, a yearbook of stray ideas. I hope it creates a delicious bonus read for fans of my work, and perhaps also a glimpse into the writer’s process.
To receive your copy, you just need to take out an annual subscription, and we’ll send you a copy by email! If you’re already an annual subscriber, you should receive your copy by email today.
Why is it only for annual subscribers?
We incentivise annual subscriptions because they help us to plan and fund more interesting posts. It’s also way better value, the equivalent of getting two months free per year. If you’re a monthly subscriber, you can upgrade any time. (Btw, we regularly give away free subscriptions to people who would like to join the community but can’t afford to: apply here if that sounds like you.)
What we offer:
Weekly posts, including journaling prompts, essays, cultural recommendations and guides.
Ad-free podcast episodes, and bonus episodes coming in May!
The True Stories Book Club, which focuses on classic wayfinding memoir or nature writing.
Regular community prompts, including opportunities to share your current work.
Commenting rights. We paywall the chat to keep this community safe and troll-free.
Subscribing via the Substack app may mean a slightly higher cost because of Apple/Google fees. We recommend signing up via the Substack website rather than in-app because of this.
You can subscribe or upgrade your subscription here.
And just a final bit of housekeeping - I’ve changed the base currency of subscriptions to GBP. You will see the subscription in your local currency but there may a small variation in cost because we’ve altered the currency from which it’s converted. We haven’t raised prices, it’s a case of stabilising it all for me. The montly subscription price will be £6 and the annual subscription price £50.
Take care,
Katheirne

Hello - the original version of this post was missing a link to the form to request a subscription for those who would like to join the community but can’t afford to. It's here, and now in the body of the post. https://katherine-may.co.uk/free-places-substack
