Briefly: Want to see my new book cover? | Live dates & workshops | New bonus Sunday newsletter | Join my Patreon Community Hello, I’ve been thinking a lot, lately, about why I write. These questions raise themselves when you’re about to share new work with the world. In the last few weeks, proof copies of my latest book have been going out to my first readers. It’s terrifying. Not for the first time, I wonder why I’ve thrown everything I have at this career, rather than something more sensible and less exposing. A couple of years ago, someone went to the effort of direct messaging me on Twitter to suggest I might like to give up writing and become a librarian, because ‘it’s a good job for an autistic person’ and I ‘seem to like books quite a lot’. Maybe I shouldn’t have blocked them after all.
"My books always have their feet in uncertainty." Just beautiful, and I imagine it's why your writing is so resonant for the many of us who are just trying to make do and find a little peace and wonder in a complicated, unpredictable world. I've pre-ordered, and can't wait to read it. I remember when you announced this book, March 2023 felt so far away. Suddenly it's feeling just around the corner. May this book be received with all the warmth, praise, and gratitude I'm already sure it deserves!
I write to find my thoughts too. Maybe it’s an autistic thing. 🥰 I’ve always journaled, but last year I wrote my first book. It’s been such a satisfying deep dive. I’m addicted. ✏️
Two words: Anne Lamott. Wow! And it’s so weird because as I was reading your words before it got to that part, I thought, I wondered if Anne Lamott reads your books!!! (I’m reading two hers again right now; Bird by Bird and Help Thanks Wow).
I can not wait for this next book Katherine, I’d love to pre-order it too and when the date rolls around for UK publication I will so excited to have given myself this future gift *squeals*
Love this about writing and its purpose. In a similar vein, Alice Jolly has a line in her book Dead Babies And Seaside Towns that I think about often: 'Most writers - whether professional or amateur - write because they're trying to recover some knowledge which was part of their birthright, but which was lost to them far back in time, right at the beginning'. Your new book sounds absolutely perfect - congratulations. x
And of course I have heard and read Anne Lamont and listen to Krista Tibbets ! Your book is in perfect timing as the world gets more confusing. Can’t wait to read.
I found it so interesting to read your thoughts on writing, Katherine. I've had similar thoughts recently about writing and whether I'm cut out for this whole publishing business as it can feel so difficult mentally sometimes. But I also know I too need writing to make sense of the world (even if in a different way).
The new book sounds just what we all need to read right now. And I love the US cover!
This looks gorgeous in all the ways, and it looks like perhaps the most perfectly-timed book ever launched (even compared to "Wintering", which is saying a lot).
I have heard of Anne Lamott! She is ace and so are you. Book looks lovely. Still haven't read Wintering, though. (I do own a copy). From your friendly local autistic librarian. :)
